Union Securities Ltd. Solidifies Strategic Vision With Appointment of Executive Committee, President, and CEO

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Dec. 16, 2008) - Union Securities Ltd., an independent Canadian investment dealer, has appointed an executive committee, a new president and a new chief executive officer to spearhead the firm's continued success.

John MacPhail has been appointed the new CEO of Union Securities and Arden Cornford as the new president. The two positions were previously held by John Thompson (vice-chairman) and Norman Thompson Jr. (chairman). "These changes represent the natural evolution of the firm from a family-run business, founded over 45 years ago by my father, Norman Thompson Sr.," says John Thompson, "my brother Norm and I feel that making room for these new appointments is key to our continued growth and success." The newly formed executive committee, headed by MacPhail and working with the board of directors, is already developing plans for implementation over the coming weeks.

MacPhail, who joined Union Securities in 2007 as executive vice president and managing director of Capital Markets, brings with him a wealth of industry experience beginning as a floor trader at the Vancouver Stock Exchange in 1982. Since then, he has held a variety of senior positions, including national retail manager and director at Yorkton Securities, and executive vice president and director at Research Capital Corporation.

The selection of MacPhail builds on his successes at Union, broadening the Union brand and aiding in achieving the goals of the firm. "I am very excited to take on this role," says MacPhail. "Union Securities is in a unique position to take advantage of the opportunities presented today. I look forward to working with a great team that will align our current talent with the overall strategic vision."

Cornford, formerly executive vice president of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs, brings his significant experience in corporate governance and executive management to the position. Prior to his current role at Union Securities, Cornford was president of ADP Investor Communications, vice chairman and CEO of FundSERV Inc., and in corporate administration at Dofasco Inc.

Along with MacPhail and Cornford, the executive committee consists of Scott Taylor, chief financial officer, Martin Lang, chief compliance officer, and Rob Titerle, chief administrative officer/chief information officer. These members of the executive committee will continue their respective roles within the firm while functioning as a team to proactively focus on core lines of business and realize the strategic direction as envisioned by the board of directors.

"John and Arden bring a combination of experience, energy and professionalism to these positions," stated Norman Thompson Jr., "We see this as the next logical step and are confident that this will take the firm to the next level." Norman Sr., Norman Jr., John, and Rex Thompson, have grown the firm to its present-day success, and are now taking the opportunity to focus at the board level on the long term goals and direction of the firm.
