Unite ballot begins on New LGPS final regulations

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - June 12, 2007) - Unite (Amicus section) members who have the right in their employment to join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) are to be balloted (ends 9 July 2007) on whether they accept the new LPGS Final Regulations.

The Department of Communities and Local Government have now laid the final regulations for the Local Government Pension Scheme which will become operational from 1st April 2008.

The Unite Local Authorities National Sector Committee met and scrutinised the new LGPS Final Regulations and voted to recommend acceptance of the changes to the LGPS.

The Local Authorities National Sector Committee felt the outcome of the consultations were the best that can be achieved through negotiation and it was agreed to run a consultative ballot of the Unite Local Authorities LGPS members.

Unite National Officer, John Allott, said:

"One of the reasons for conducting a consultative ballot in this way is so that Shop Stewards hold meetings at the workplace and discuss the LGPS and the issues with our members.

"I would encourage shop stewards to hold workplace meetings in order that our members are fully informed. Only a strong collective voice will ensure a good final salary pension scheme.
