Unite Calls On Standard Life To Recognise Its Above Standard Staff

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Sept. 4, 2007) - Unite Britain's biggest union will today remind Standard Life that its' 71% rise in half year profits is thanks to the staff whose pensions were cut by the company earlier this year.

Unite the union is preparing to make a formal application for recognition in the coming weeks, following recent comments from Sandy Crombie indicating that he does not want an independent trade union representing the interests of Standard Life staff. This is despite hundreds of Standard Life staff joining Unite since the beginning of the year.

Unite is calling on the company to recognise and reward the staff for the contribution they have made to Standard Life's increasing profitability. Instead the union believes that the company have brutally attacked staff pensions and rejected the wishes of hundreds of staff who wish to be represented by an independent trade union.

Unite National Officer, David Fleming says:
"Standard Life should reward its staff for this impressive increase in profits. Instead, they have cut pensions and rejected the wishes of hundreds of staff who want to be represented by an independent trade union. Unite demands the employees are apologised to and are given due recognition and reward for the success they have brought about."

"It's clear that Standard Life do not want the union's hand in friendship. So we now have no choice but to prepare a formal application for recognition. "
