Unite meets with Northern Rock Management

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Sept. 21, 2007) - At a meeting with Unite the union Northern Rock has agreed to pay staff double pay for overtime during the period of the crisis. Following the meeting with senior management Unite has today pledged their support for Northern Rock.

At a meeting last night (Thursday 20th September) Unite sought assurances on job security and clarity on the future of staff at the bank.

The union has welcomed the gratitude expressed by Deputy Chief Executive David Baker to the hard working staff of the bank. In recognition of the commitment and dedication shown by employees, it has been agreed with Unite that the company will pay staff double time for all overtime between 14th - 21st September. In addition, Unite has secured a guarantee from management that there will be no compulsory redundancies following the events of the last week.

Unite National Officer, David Fleming, says: "Unite is encouraged by the discussions which took place in our meeting with Northern Rock. Our members have worked tirelessly over the past week to ensure customers of the bank receive a professional service. We are pleased that management recognise this commitment through improved overtime payments.

"There is no doubt that speculation about the future of Northern Rock will continue. Unite has now agreed closer links with Northern Rock for consultation on matters that effect staff. We have now had a pledge that the company will work to avoid any compulsory redundancies in the event of either a restructuring or a transfer."

The meeting was attended by: Northern Rock Deputy Chief Executive David Baker, Personnel Director, Lynne Griffin and A.D. Personnel, Maureen Henderson, Unite's National Officer, David Fleming, Russell Greig (Senior Rep) and Frank Needham (Unite Officer).

The Unite National Officer for Finance, Dave Fleming visited the Northumberland Street branch in Newcastle prior to the meeting on the 20th September and was impressed by the resolve and strength of the branch staff when he opened an account in front of the media and press to demonstrate Unite's support for Northern Rock.

Messages of support for Northern Rock staff have been received by Unite from the Alliance for Finance, Unite members at Capita-Resolution and others. North Durham MP Kevan Jones also offered his support saying;

"Northern Rock is not only important in terms of the North East economy, but I know from many charitable organisations in my constituency that they have received valued support from the Northern Rock Foundation".
