Unite members at Remploy to be balloted for strike

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Sept. 4, 2007) - Unite the Union and GMB members working at Remploy factories up and down the country will be balloted next week (11th September) for industrial action over the company's proposal to close 43 sites and make thousands of employees redundant.

A formal notice was sent to Remploy today informing them of Unite's intention to ballot its members for industrial action. Remploy, the UK's biggest employer of disabled people, employs over 5,000 disabled workers in 82 factories nationally. The company is proposing to close 43 sites which will result in thousands job losses.

Unite Regional Officer, Kevin Hepworth, said:
"Unite and the other unions regret having to ballot their members in defence of jobs in Remploy. However the company is continuing with its programme of closures throwing thousands of disabled workers out of meaningful work.

"We must ballot to be ready to fight for jobs if the company continue to ignore the alternative business plan proposed by the unions. We hope for a huge YES vote to impress on not just the company but also the Government as disabled workers deserve better.

"We are not prepared to stand back and watch our Remploy factory network destroyed because of an incompetent management."
Remploy provides crucial employment for both disabled and non disabled workers nationally. These plans to cut jobs will have a devastating effect on all workers across the factory network.
