Unite on Department of Health announcement on private sector involvement in the NHS

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Nov. 15, 2007) -

Kevin Coyne, Unite's Head of Health, said:

"At first glance today's announcement appears to be a welcome retreat from the planned extension of private sector involvement in the NHS but today the government has also announced the creation of a forum to formalise private sector involvement in advising both the Department of Health and Strategic Health Authorities.

"Unite wants a broader review to be performed, examining the role, performance and value for money parameters of the private sector in public health, and for this to happen before these companies are given a powerful role in policy making at the heart of the NHS.

"We also want to know how this forum will relate to the existing Social Partnership Forum which gives trade unions a strategic role in NHS policy-making."
