Unite Response to Alan Johnson's Speech on Work Health Balance

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Feb. 20, 2008) -

Rob Miguel, Unite Health and Safety National Officer said:

"If Alan Johnson is serious about addressing work life balance and workers' ill health then perhaps he should be telling employers to stop taking advantage of nearly five million people in the UK who regularly undertake unpaid overtime, giving their employers an average Pounds Sterling 4,955 of free work a year."

Notes to editors:

This Friday is work your proper hours day, the day when the average British worker finishes the unpaid overtime they do in a year and starts getting paid for their normal working hours. The primary reason for this is that the UK Government has consistently defended the opt out from the Working Time Directive, and fought the majority of European countries that want it removed. As a result UK workers work some of the longest in Europe, with no increased productivity as a result.
