Unite Say Nissan's Decision to Create a Third Shift is 'Fantastic'

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Jan. 31, 2008) -

Roger Maddison, Unite National Officer, said:

"The news that Nissan intend to recruit 400 permanent people at the plant in Sunderland with another 400 on temporary contracts is fantastic news for the Northeast, our members and the motor industry as a whole. Unite the union members were instrumental in the near flawless launch of the UK designed Qashqai last year, with sales in 2007 in excess of 164,000.

"With orders and forecasted sales expected to be even better this year a 3rd shift of production is needed in order to meet demand.

"This vote of confidence in the Nissan workforce and the UK car business is a smack in the face to the Peugeot's of this world who claim the UK is not the place to invest and proves once again that UK manufacturing is alive and kicking."
