Unite today supported calls by David Cairns, Labour Scottish Office Minister, for the SNP to end its' opposition to nuclear energy which it says will cost jobs in manufacturing and in construction.
The UK's largest trade union and energy union says that the SNP led Scottish administration's policy also ignores some of the biggest threats facing the UK - global warming and ensuring the security of energy supply.
Unite Regional Secretary for Scotland, John Quigley, said:
"It seems incredible that the SNP has dismissed the contribution that nuclear energy makes, both to ensuring a balanced energy policy and in reducing emissions.
"Over 1,400 jobs are involved in the nuclear industry nationwide and entire communities such as those at Hunterston and Torness depend on it so why is it that the SNP led administration is so determined to prevent Scotland from sharing in the employment and economic prosperity that a new generation of nuclear energy can deliver?
"The SNP needs to be called to account for their policy and the threat it makes to highly skilled and highly paid jobs in Scotland. It should also accept that nuclear energy must figure in ensuring a balanced energy supply for the UK."
