Unite Secures Legal Victory for Sacked Electrical Workers

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 17, 2007) - Unite members are celebrating a massive legal victory following their successful claim in the Norwich Employment Tribunal.

Electricians who used to be employed at Fishers Electrical (Norwich) Ltd, an established local electrical contractor, were made redundant with no notice or consultation on 30th June 2006 as a result of the company going into administration.

Unite the Union, has been pursuing legal cases on behalf of the 14 sacked members.

In a recent tribunal decision, the 14 members are celebrating a share of compensation exceeding Pounds Sterling 120,000.

Unite Regional Officer, Mark Robinson, commented: "We are pleased that the tribunal found in our favour. We hope our members receive some of their compensation in time for Christmas.

"However, it has taken almost 18 months to get to this stage and the compensation allowed by law is still inadequate as some of the monies awarded may not be recoverable from the administrators. The law must be improved to protect workers who find themselves sacked when a company goes bust."

Unite Regional Construction Officer, Richard Clarke, added: "Fishers of Norwich and their workforce served Norfolk and Norwich for over 80 years and it is sad to see it go under. However, Unite will not tolerate our members being dismissed with no notice, consultation and adequate compensation. The outcome of this case demonstrates that the union will take action against all employers who fail to undertake their legal obligations."
