Unite trade union on government's new housing plans

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Sept. 14, 2007) -

Gail Cartmail, Unite's Head of the Public Sector and Assistant General Secretary, said:

"The government is talking about encouraging local authorities to allow more homes to be built by private developers but what is desperately required is more affordable and secure rented council and housing association housing built and managed by local authorities and housing associations.

"The lack of supply and the spiralling cost of housing is causing people to borrow many times their income and, as we have already seen in the US, this can have dangerous consequences.

"Local authorities must be allowed to borrow the money needed to build new council homes, as is Labour Party policy."
