Unite welcomes new Repair and Overhaul centre at DARA

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - June 12, 2007) - Unite the Union, the UK's largest trade union, welcomes the news that Airbus Cimpa are considering opening a Repair and Overhaul centre at the Defence Aviation Repair Agency (DARA) in St Athan.

This project would create over 100 highly skilled Aircraft Engineering Technicians positions by the end of 2007 rising to up to 500 in three years. It would also bring in civilian aircraft and the A400M military aircraft which is being phased in to replace the Hercules C130 aircraft to DARA St Athan.

Unite (Amicus Section) Regional Officer, Bryan Godsell, said:
"The proposal would provide much needed employment for members made redundant as a result of the closure of the Fast Jet facility at DARA St Athan.

"We believe that the proposal also compliments the Metrix proposal to build the Defence Training Academy at St Athan.
"We welcome this move by Airbus Cimpa and we are calling on the Welsh Assembly Government and MOD Defence Estates to do everything possible to secure this work. It would be a travesty if this work was lost to Hungary or Poland."

Notes to Editors:

Jobs created would be:
Highly skilled Aircraft Engineering Technicians i.e. Airframe Technicians, Propulsion Technicians, Aircraft Electricians, Avionics and the associated support grades in Administration.
