United Church Condemns Bombing outside Jewish Community Centre

Attention: City Editor, News Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO NEWS RELEASE--(CCNMatthews - April 5, 2007) - In a letter sent today to the Canadian Jewish Congress, The United Church of Canada has expressed profound shock following the attack last Tuesday evening on the Ben Weider Jewish Community Centre in Montreal.

The text of the letter, which was signed by Nora Sanders, the General Secretary of the General Council, reads as follows:

"On behalf of The United Church of Canada I write to share our shock and condemnation of the attack on the Ben Weider Jewish Community Centre late Tuesday evening.

While such an act warrants condemnation at any time, it is deeply troubling that it took place during the Jewish Passover and the Christian celebration of Holy Week.

As Christians, we remember the sad history of antisemitism and the crescendo of hatred that it generated particularly during Holy Week and Good Friday. We remember the complicity of Christian teachings and practice in fostering such acts of hate.

It is in this act of remembrance that we join with the Canadian Jewish Congress in condemning this attack in particular and all such expressions of hatred.

Because we know that such acts have an effect on the whole Jewish community, please accept our deepest sadness and regret that such hatred still persists in our country and world."
