United Way Establishes Asia Disaster Recovery Fund for Myanmar and China

Funds Will Support Long-Term Recovery and Construction Efforts

ALEXANDRIA, VA--(Marketwire - May 15, 2008) - United Way today announced the creation of the Asia Disaster Recovery Fund to support long-term recovery and construction efforts in Myanmar and China. This fund has been created in response to the devastation caused by the powerful earthquake in the Sichuan Province of China on May 12, and the destructive cyclone in Myanmar on May 2.

In China, United Way member organization China Charity Federation will work with partners to assess long-term recovery and reconstruction needs. In spite of the difficulty in getting aid to Myanmar, United Way is working with HOPE Worldwide for help in assessing the situation. Myanmar has allowed the regional leader from HOPE Worldwide in Thailand to gain entry into the country. United Way and HOPE Worldwide will work together to identify long-term reconstruction and community rebuilding projects in Myanmar.

"Our thoughts remain with the victims, their loved ones and everyone affected by these tragedies," said Teresa Hall Bartels, president and CEO of United Way International. "United Way is here for the victims, their loved ones and the entire region. We will be here for the long term to support the recovery of all the affected communities in China and Myanmar."

United Way International's Board of Directors will approve disbursement of funds following due diligence by its International Donor Advised Giving team, experts in international grant-making. Grants from the fund will focus on long-term health, education and financial stability for people affected by these disasters. Proposals will be evaluated by an experienced team of professionals and volunteers prior to awarding grants. United Way International, along with its members and partners, will monitor progress of all grants and regularly report to its Board of Directors.

This fund, similar to one established following the 2004 South Asia Tsunami, will provide much-needed assistance to the survivors of these disasters long after the media spotlight has faded.

Financial donations can be made online at www.uwint.org, or mailed to United Way International, 701 N. Fairfax St., Alexandria, VA 22314. For additional information, contact: United Way International at uwi@unitedway.org, or by phone at 703-519-0092.
