United Way Ottawa And Hydro Ottawa Announce Recipients of Brighter Tomorrows Fund Grants to Organizations Helping the Homeless

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 9, 2011) - United Way Ottawa and Hydro Ottawa announced today the twelve recipients of the Brighter Tomorrows Fund grants. The Brighter Tomorrows Fund, financed by Hydro Ottawa and administered by United Way Ottawa provides grants to frontline agencies that serve people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless to invest in energy-efficient technologies or products.

The renovations and purchases include installation of high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, energy-efficient washers and dryers, roof repairs and low emission windows that keep out the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter. These renovations will help reduce energy bills, creating savings that the organizations can use for programming.

"Hydro Ottawa has long been committed to helping individuals and families find and maintain safe, stable and affordable housing," says David McKendry, Director, Customer Service for Hydro Ottawa. "Combining this commitment with our expertise and dedication to energy management, the Brighter Tomorrows Fund will allow us to make a more meaningful and long lasting contribution to our community."

David McKendry and Michael Allen, President and CEO of United Way Ottawa made the announcement at a joint news conference at the Ottawa Mission, one of the twelve recipients of the Brighter Tomorrows Fund grants.

"This fund is an example of United Way's enhanced role in the community; a role that reflects our evolution and the evolution of donors," says Michael Allen. "They want to make investments that line up with their vision and want to see the impact of their donation – the meaningful, measurable change it creates."

Using corporate matching dollars from Hydro Ottawa's annual workplace campaign, the Brighter Tomorrows Fund granted $134,142.00 to12 agencies for 17 separate projects.
