University of Advancing Technology Professor Selected for International Art Exhibition

TEMPE, AZ -- (MARKET WIRE) -- December 27, 2006 -- University of Advancing Technology (UAT) Professor Paul Andrus has been selected by the Florence Biennale committee to exhibit his artworks at the Biennale Internazionale dell'Arte Contemporanea -- the largest artist-supported exhibition in the world. The Biennale will take place in Florence, Italy, in December 2007.

Andrus' selection was based on his works in various European galleries -- both online and physical, via digital means. Also, he has gallery pieces in Australia, New Zealand and the United States. The Bienniale committee scouts for recognized artists, as well as unknown and emerging talents.

Notable honorees at past Florence Biennales include Christo and Jean-Claude, David Hockney and Prince Charles of Great Britain.

Because Andrus was selected by a panel of judges, Andrus was given the opportunity to select which of his own works will be exhibited. But the bigger decision will be how to finance the trip to Italy for both himself and his works -- the Florence Biennale is neither public nor privately backed, so artists are required to finance their trip and shipment of their artwork.

Andrus estimates his expenses -- shipping paintings and travel expenses -- to be about $25,000. He is looking at sponsorship from alumni associations of alma maters, and is soliciting assistance from private benefactors, locally and nationwide.

Whatever the expense, Andrus hopes his appearance will garner recognition for his talents. "I was almost ready to delete [the email]; then something told me to keep reading," says Andrus. "And then I called up some old professors of mine, and they said that this is part of the 'triple crown' of art exhibitions. It's very prestigious, and to be invited is an honor."

Although Andrus is pleased to be recognized on an international level, he hopes his exhibition in Florence will lead to recognition in his home country as well.
