The University of Alabama at Birmingham Selects Apogee to Boost Network Speeds and Wi-Fi for Five Residential Halls

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwired - Aug 12, 2014) - Apogee, higher education's largest residential network (ResNet) provider, announced today that the company has been selected by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) to provide residential networks for its five residential halls. Apogee will plan, install and roll out high-speed wired and Wi-Fi connectivity for UAB's student residents living at its on-campus residential buildings.

UAB's advanced network infrastructure incorporates the latest technologies to provide residents with internet connectivity that starts at a trailblazing 250 Mbps per resident, about 25 times faster than the average 10 Mbps broadband connection speed in American households today.

"Advanced networks are essential in the education environment," said Carolyn Farley, director of Academic and Student Services. "We feel a real responsibility to give our students cutting edge technology so they can thrive in a community of scholars."

UAB joins a fast growing roster of universities and colleges who have come to rely on Apogee to provide high-speed wired and Wi-Fi connectivity, and around-the-clock support for their technologically-savvy and bandwidth-hungry students. Apogee's deep and specialized ResNet expertise in higher Ed equips the company with the unique ability to meet UAB's high standards for technological leadership, and for a seamless installation plan and rollout.

In addition to higher levels of speed, performance and scalability, UAB's new residential network also provides the following:

  • High-speed wireless and wired services.
  • Comprehensive and complimentary Wi-Fi connectivity covering all student rooms and community spaces, including study rooms, laundry rooms and lobby areas.
  • Tiered bandwidth connectivity options for heavier users to purchase additional bandwidth.
  • Dedicated full-time Apogee coordinator to provide on-site student support. The coordinator station will be prominently located at the Blazer Hall lobby.
  • 24/7/365 troubleshooting and support by phone, email, chat and text.
  • Ability to connect to print stations conveniently located in community spaces, such as residence hall lobbies.

"As higher education's ResNet leader, Apogee is proud to provide UAB students with unprecedented access to a variety of network amenities," said Chuck Brady, chief executive officer of Apogee. "We have found a shared vision and commitment in the UAB team, and are very much looking forward to a successful partnership as we work together to empower students to learn through technology."

Apogee's UAB student network went live in late July, several weeks ahead of August 25, the first day of UAB's fall semester. To kick start student access to the new network, UAB Housing and Residence Life will provide new and current residents instructions via email, welcome packages and flyers.
