University congratulates Lois Mitchell on her appointment as next Lieutenant Governor of Alberta

CALGARY, AB--(Marketwired - May 21, 2015) - The University of Calgary is thrilled that long-time supporter Lois Mitchell has been selected as Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. Both Mrs. Mitchell and her husband Doug have a longstanding relationship with the University of Calgary as donors, fund-raisers and volunteers.

"Lois Mitchell and her family have not only contributed financially to the success of the university, but have given of themselves in terms of both their time and expertise," said University of Calgary President Elizabeth Cannon. "Mrs. Mitchell has been instrumental in helping grow our university, and we couldn't be happier for her on receiving this appointment."

Mrs. Mitchell is a strong advocate of the arts, education, business and sport and much of her time is spent serving the organizations she supports, including a number of University of Calgary boards and committees. She is the Chair of the Advisory Board of the Latin America Research Centre, and is a member of the Distinguished Business Leader Award Selection Committee. Mrs. Mitchell is also a member of the Advisory Panel Investing in New Canadians Programs at the Haskayne School of Business. In 2014, she established the Dr. Stephen Randall Prize in History awarded to the best undergraduate honours thesis in the Department of History.

The Mitchells are also proud supporters of Dinos athletics, and recently established an endowment for University of Calgary student-athletes to participate in an innovative new program that focuses on Leadership Education in Athlete Development (Dinos LEAD). They also established the annual Mitchell Women's Athletic Awards Endowment in 2006 to honour female athletes that achieve outstanding success with Dinos athletics.

Congratulations to Lois Mitchell and her family on this wonderful honour. The University of Calgary values their many contributions to our university and community, and look forward to continuing our relationship with the Mitchell family as Lois Mitchell embraces this fitting honour.
