University of Nebraska-Lincoln Uses Azimuth Systems' ACE™ 400WB Channel Emulator for Federal Railroad Study on Mobile WiMAX

ACTON, MA--(Marketwire - June 9, 2008) - Azimuth Systems, Inc., a leading provider of wireless broadband test equipment, including the industry's only MIMO-optimized channel emulation platform for 4G and Wi-Fi, today announced that the Advanced Telecommunications Engineering Laboratory (TEL) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has selected the ACE™ 400WB channel emulator to perform a comprehensive mobile WiMAX technology study to investigate the performance and reliability of standards-based wireless networking technologies for the North American railroad industry. The study, funded by the Federal Railroad Administration, will provide insight into the performance and feasibility of using 802.16e-2005 mobile WiMAX technology in enhancing current wireless networking infrastructure.

In evaluating a mobile WiMAX testing solution, the university realized that field testing was limited in its scope to test deployment topology and the environment. Simulations provided a flexible option in realizing numerous different deployment scenarios and environmental conditions, but modeling real-world WiMAX systems accurately and reliably proved to be challenging and time-consuming. TEL researchers were in need of a solution that would allow them to combine the benefits of both approaches. Recognizing the inherent requirements for testing MIMO devices, TEL chose the ACE 400WB WiMAX channel emulator due to its best-in-class RF fidelity, along with the fact that it provides the most cost effective, scalable solution for testing a variety of uni-directional and bi-directional MIMO configurations.

"In conducting the WiMAX technology study, we have found that the ACE 400WB combines the benefits of using real-world equipment, such as base stations and mobile stations, with the flexibility and accuracy of a controlled test environment," said Dr. Hamid Sharif, professor and head of the Telecommunications Engineering Laboratory at University of Nebraska. "As we become more familiar with the advanced capabilities of the system, we look forward to utilizing it in many future projects as well, including the integration of the platform into our simulation models by leveraging its programmability using TCL scripting."

With the ACE 400WB, channel conditions are varied dynamically, allowing researchers to observe the performance impact on the Device Under Test (DUT). Dynamic channel emulation varies the MIMO channel conditions using statistical models programmed by the researchers, and allows them to observe the performance of the system under simulated conditions. These advanced capabilities allow the team to achieve accurate performance predictions for OFDMA and MIMO transmission in their specific use case scenarios.

"As the industry's only MIMO-optimized channel emulator, Azimuth's ACE platform incorporates RF capabilities that enable automated testing of the mobility, high throughput and extended range promised by multi-antenna wireless technologies like mobile WiMAX and LTE," said Graham Celine, senior director of marketing at Azimuth Systems. "We're pleased to see that the ACE 400WB has allowed University of Nebraska researchers to cut down on time-consuming field testing with a system that will deliver repeatable and automated evaluation capabilities in the lab, significantly reducing the time and expenses typically associated this type of research."
