University of Calgary: 50th anniversary of Canada's largest science fair

University of Calgary to host Calgary Youth Science Fair at the Olympic Oval

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - April 19, 2012) - Nearly 1000 students from schools in and around Calgary will meet this week at the University of Calgary's Olympic Oval to participate in the 50th anniversary of the Calgary Youth Science Fair.

The first Calgary City Science Fair was held at the Jubilee Auditorium in March of 1962. There were more than 300 entries in the first year divided into 24 categories based on grade and scientific area. Originally only students in grades 7-12 competed in the fair, but elementary students did display projects. The science fair would later move to Mewata Armories, and then to the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Grounds.

"The Calgary Youth Science Fair was created to foster a love of science in youth," said Leslie Sears, President Calgary Youth Science Fair Society. "For 50 years it has brought together young scientists and their projects in a competition that encourages creativity and teaches scientific methodology."

This year the fair will celebrate 50 years April 18-21 in its new home at the Olympic Oval as part of a new partnership with the University of Calgary.

"We are proud to partner with the Calgary Youth Science Fair," said University of Calgary President Elizabeth Cannon. "Partnerships such as this not only serve to integrate the University of Calgary with the community of Calgary, but also provide leadership opportunities for students. The intelligence and thirst for knowledge science fair participants demonstrate are inspiring."

The fair, which is open to students in grades 5 to 12, will open to the public on Saturday April 21, after judging on April 20. The public portion of the event will allow visitors to view the projects and will also feature Beakerhead interactive activities.
