University of Calgary: Convocation to celebrate extraordinary Calgarians

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Nov. 9, 2011) - Tomorrow more than 1,300 students will graduate from the University of Calgary during two Fall Convocation ceremonies. This year's convocation will celebrate extraordinary Calgarians and students.

Two Honorary Degrees will be presented to Calgarians who have made a profound impact on both the university, and the larger Calgary community. Calgary lawyer, community volunteer leader and University of Calgary chancellor emeritus Jack Perraton will be honoured during the morning ceremony, and Joan Snyder, lifelong philanthropist and advocate for women's sport and medical research, will receive her honorary degree during the afternoon ceremony.

The Order of the University of Calgary, which recognizes individuals who have a history of exemplary and distinguished service to the university, will be presented during the morning ceremony. This fall it will be presented to Lynne Cowe Falls, a civil engineering professor and director of students at the Schulich School of Engineering.

During the morning ceremonies, four graduates from the University of Calgary Qatar will receive their Bachelor of Nursing degrees. The University of Calgary - Qatar opened in September 2007 at the invitation of the State, and has since graduated close to 30 students.

After 24 years of studying at the University of Calgary, Neal Collins, 86, will receive two BAs (Communications & Culture and Philosophy) during the afternoon ceremony. This octogenarian has been attending the University since his retirement in 1987.

Tomorrow's graduates will be joining the University of Calgary's alumni family of more than 145,000 people in 147 countries around the world.
