University of Calgary exceeds United Way goal

University raised more than $290,000 for the annual United Way campus campaign

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Dec. 15, 2011) - The University of Calgary faculty, staff and students have shown that philanthropy is alive and well on campus, raising more than $290,000 for their annual campus campaign for the United Way of Calgary and Area.

With donations still trickling in, the final amount could be higher in the new year, and is already above and beyond the university's original goal of $225,000.

"We have surpassed every campaign goal this year-in the dollars raised, employee participation and in leader donations. We've shown our collective desire to make a difference by partnering with United Way, an organization that is heavily engaged in a broad range of activities that impact the long-term well-being of our community," says University of Calgary President, Elizabeth Cannon. "I am so proud of the teamwork, dedication and sense of fun our university family has demonstrated in support of the 2011 United Way campaign."

Dollars were raised through a combination of pledge donations and various campus fundraising events held by the faculties and departments since the campaign kicked off on campus Sept. 20. In addition to countless book sales, bake sales and raffles, some new events were introduced including throwing pies at a university executive, an icy outdoor dip in a pool of cold water and the largest campus-wide initiative, a stair climb challenge that raised approximately $30,000.

"Change starts when a community comes together to make a difference, and that's exactly what happened this year at the University of Calgary. The community spirit and energy the staff and students demonstrated throughout their campaign were remarkable. The events and activities showcased creativity as its finest," says Ruth Ramsden-Wood, president of United Way of Calgary and Area.

The University of Calgary joins other organizations in the city each year to raise funds for the United Way of Calgary and Area. Last year, approximately $51.7 million dollars was raised in Calgary, with the university contributing more than $192,000.

This year's campus campaign is the highest amount the university has raised for the United Way in more than a decade.
