University of Calgary: Master of Social Work program now available in Grande Prairie

New program to focus on community needs in Northern Alberta

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Nov. 24, 2011) - As part of its ongoing commitment to provide programs that meet the needs and requirements of its students and their communities, the University of Calgary's Faculty of Social Work today launched its latest initiative in Alberta - A Master of Social Work program in Grande Prairie. The advanced social work degree offers an accredited university program to students who hold an existing Bachelor of Social Work degree, who live or work in that region and who meet the admissibility requirements of Faculties of Social Work and Graduate Studies at the University of Calgary. The program will begin the fall of 2012, and will be run as a one-time cohort directly targeted at building social work capacity in Northern Alberta.

The program will be based at Grande Prairie Regional College and will be delivered primarily though classroom and face-to-face instruction.

"We understand that with a province as vast as Alberta, it is vital for us to look for unique ways to deliver programs to our students. And we know that the local communities will benefit as our graduates from this program will likely stay in the communities where they already live and contribute," said Jackie Sieppert, the dean of the Faculty of Social Work.

The University of Calgary Faculty of Social Work provides educational opportunities for students at three main campuses - in Calgary at The University of Calgary, in Edmonton at the Central and Northern Regional Campus, and in Lethbridge at the Southern Alberta Regional Campus. The Grande Prairie program is being delivered by the university with funding from the Government of Alberta's Health Workforce Action Plan, which aims to improve health services to better meet the needs of rural and northern Albertans.
