University of Ottawa Management and Engineering Students Tackle Hydro Ottawa Business Challenge

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 25, 2012) - This past weekend, the University of Ottawa's Telfer Student Council held their third annual Strat24 competition, a 24-hour research intense event that challenges the strengths and skills of both Management and Engineering students. As the Strat24 case study sponsor Hydro Ottawa had the honour of presenting the first place prize, a $4,000 scholarship jointly donated by the Telfer School of Management and the Faculty of Engineering, to Duane Van Gaalen, Matthew Conley, Eric Mielke and Megan Young.

This year's teams were challenged to develop a business model for Hydro Ottawa that would support the creation of a network of publicly accessible electric vehicle charging stations in downtown Ottawa. There were many issues the students had to consider in developing their proposals such as the length of the charging time, the amount of energy that would need to be delivered to the vehicle, the optimal number of charging stations, where they should be located, identifying strategic partnerships and alliances and considering opportunities for revenue generation.

"Hydro Ottawa is very active in the area of green power generation, conservation and environmental leadership", said Roger Marsh, Chief Energy Management Officer at Hydro Ottawa. "Today's students are the future of our industry and I am very pleased that Hydro Ottawa, by partnering with academia, can play a role in their success."

"It was a prime opportunity for students to put theory into practice and gain real consulting experience with a prominent sustainability focused company." said Asmait Hailu, Strat24 President. "Providing students with access to real-world expertise through collaboration with industry leaders is essential to developing real-world solutions."

Strat24 is the University of Ottawa's first ever multidisciplinary 24-hour academic competition for Management and Engineering students and has been hosted by the Telfer Student Council for the past three years.
