University System of Georgia Uses Desire2Learn Integrated Learning Platform to Deliver Next-Generation MOOC Initiative

Desire2Learn Learning Suite Provides Comprehensive Environment for the Delivery and Management of Online Learning Strategies

KITCHENER-WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 5, 2013) - Desire2Learn Incorporated ("Desire2Learn"), a leader in providing innovative learning solutions, today announced a partnership with the University System of Georgia (USG) to explore next-generation MOOCs powered by the Desire2Learn integrated learning platform.

Through this new partnership, University System of Georgia students can enroll in MOOCs to enhance their knowledge in defined subject areas and earn credits that will count towards a degree awarded from USG institutions.

"As we focus on how to better serve our students, clearly the use of technology and online learning will play a more and more important role," said University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby. "We have to think creatively about how we can meet the needs of students through access and in affordability."

In recent years, the USG has developed and put into widespread use a number of alternative pathways for students to achieve degree completion. The USG currently hosts more than 60,000 courses in the Desire2Learn learning system. This uniquely positions the USG and Desire2Learn to partner in the fast-evolving field of MOOCs. This partnership represents another alternative pathway for faculty to use as Georgia seeks to significantly increase college completion rates.

"A key measure of success for an online learning initiative is its demonstrated ability to help increase student learning and graduation rates," said Houston Davis, Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer for the University System of Georgia. "Partnerships with organizations such as Desire2Learn provide the University System with more options to help our students succeed academically."

"It's clear that the University System of Georgia and member universities and colleges are taking online learning to a higher level," said John Baker, President and CEO, Desire2Learn. "They understand that technology-enabled learning environments can help break down barriers to accessing the highest quality learning experiences and are positioning their institutions favorably for future growth."
