Upcoming Deadline for Voting by Mail or at the Office of the Returning Officer in November 27, 2006, Federal By-elections

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 16, 2006) - The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Jean-Pierre Kingsley, reminded electors today that those who wish to vote by mail or at the office of the returning officer for the Monday, November 27, 2006, federal by-elections in Repentigny (Quebec) and London North Centre (Ontario) must register to obtain a special ballot voting kit.

Applications to vote by special ballot from electors who are temporarily outside Repentigny or London North Centre during the by-elections must reach Elections Canada in Ottawa by 6:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Tuesday, November 21, 2006. Electors in Repentigny or London North Centre wishing to vote by special ballot must make sure their applications reach the returning officer by 6:00 p.m. (local time) on Tuesday, November 21, 2006.

However, to obtain a special ballot voting kit more quickly, it is highly recommended that electors visit the office of the returning officer before 6:00 p.m. (local time) on Tuesday, November 21, 2006.

"We have taken steps to respond as quickly as possible to the demand for last-minute registration," said Mr. Kingsley. "We ask these electors to watch for the arrival of the voting kit in the mail so that they, in turn, can deal with it as quickly as possible."

An elector away from Repentigny or London North Centre must ensure that the completed ballot arrives at Elections Canada in Ottawa by 6:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) on election day, Monday, November 27. An elector voting by special ballot in Repentigny or London North Centre must ensure that the returning officer receives the completed ballot before the local polling stations close at 8:30 p.m. (local time) on election day.

Elections Canada reminds electors that they may also vote in advance tomorrow, Friday, November 17, Saturday, November 18, and Monday, November 20 at the advance polls.

For further information, an elector may contact the office of his or her returning officer, visit www.elections.ca or call Elections Canada at 1-800-463-6868.

It is important to note that once an elector has registered to vote by special ballot, he or she may not vote at the regular or advance polls. As stated in the Canada Elections Act, it is illegal to vote more than once at an election.

By-elections will be held in Repentigny and London North Centre on Monday, November 27, 2006.
