UPDATE: ACE Collaborates With Sopris Learning on New Literacy Program & Professional Development Model Developed by Louisa Moats, Ed.D.

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - Jul 5, 2011) - American College of Education (ACE) announces its collaboration with Sopris, a business unit of Cambium Learning Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: ABCD) in the launch of a new Master of Education with a Concentration in Literacy, which will also be available as an online professional development program, LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling). Literacy expert Louisa Moats, Ed.D. developed the new degree in collaboration with the American College of Education.

The new program, delivered online by American College of Education, enables participants to receive professional development with CEUs, earn a Concentration in Literacy or earn a Master's Degree in Curriculum & Instruction with a Concentration in Literacy. The coursework will be delivered using the College's highly successful online learning management platform, Epic, which is student-friendly, media rich, interactive and easily accessible.

Sandra J. Doran, president of American College of Education notes, "The new academy programs created with Sopris Learning and Dr. Louisa Moats will provide teachers throughout the country with a world-class professional education based on scientific research, grounded in teaching practice proven to achieve results with all children. These graduate and professional development programs will provide relevant job-related content that teachers can use effectively in their classroom immediately. Dr. Moats is recognized as one of the nation's leading experts in reading education and in developing ways to bring positive change to reading instruction in today's classrooms."

Educators can now complete the affordable and accessible professional development program entirely online through the American College of Education or in-person using curriculum delivered by certified LETRS trainers. Educators can also become LETRS Online Facilitators by taking an Online Facilitator Course offered by American College of Education. The updated model not only responds to the need for high-quality literacy educators at all levels, but in addition, provides deep foundational knowledge and:

  • Is research-based
  • Supports common core standards
  • Provides strategies and activities that can be implemented immediately
  • Increases effectiveness of any core or supplemental program

  • Provides graduate credit for knowledge gained

The online options offered by American College of Education are in addition to those offered by Cambium Learning, and fit into any school system or state-level implementation and support any educator pursuing a greater depth of literacy knowledge for professional development or graduate-level studies.

"Our collaboration with Sopris Learning showcases our College's strength in not only creating programs to effectively support the needs of an individual teacher, but also delivering large-scale programs aligned to district or state strategic goals," said Vernon Johnson, Ed.D., executive vice president for American College of Education.
