UPDATE - HEALTH HAZARD ALERT

SAROLI BRAND NATURAL CERIGNOLA OLIVES MAY CONTAIN DANGEROUS BACTERIA Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Food/Beverage Editor, Health/Medical Editor, News Editor OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 11, 2005) - Audio clips available at www.inspection.gc.ca/english/direct/media/.

The public warning issued on November 8, 2005 has been expanded to include additional information on product distribution. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Bar. It. Co. Ltd. are warning the public not to consume Saroli brand Natural Cerignola Olives described below because the product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. Toxins produced by this bacteria may cause botulism, a life-threatening illness.

The affected product, Saroli brand Natural Cerignola Olives, a product of Italy, is sold in a 3100 mL container bearing UPC 7 79390 00215. Product bearing lot codes 054/5 and 075/5 are affected by this alert. The affected product is known to have been distributed in Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia and may have been distributed nationally.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Food contaminated with Clostridium botulinum toxin may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with the toxin may cause nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, headache, double vision, dry throat, respiratory failure and paralysis. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

The importer, Bar. It. Co. Ltd., Toronto, Ontario, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
