Update: SIU Continues Investigation Into Wellington County Vehicle Death

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 12, 2010) - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into a fatal collision in Wellington County that occurred on February 11, 2009.

The SIU was notified by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) that at approximately 1:30 a.m., an officer began to follow a vehicle southbound on Highway 23, north of Palmerston, for investigation of a Highway Traffic Act infraction. A short time later, that vehicle collided with an oncoming northbound vehicle with two occupants. One of the occupants of the northbound vehicle, 22-year-old Katherine McNally, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other occupant, an 18-year old male, suffered serious injuries and is still in hospital. The 25-year-old male driver of the southbound vehicle is in hospital with minor injuries.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries (including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police. Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to the Attorney General.
