Update to SIU Investigation Into Vehicle Death in Wellington County

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 19, 2011) - Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of 30-year-old Robert Collins of Milton as a result of a motorcycle-car collision in Wellington County on Sunday July 17.

The SIU has designated one Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer as a subject officer. Twelve civilian witnesses have been identified and interviews are ongoing.

A forensic post-mortem examination was conducted in Hamilton yesterday. The results will be forthcoming to SIU investigators in the future.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation

  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid

  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
