Upgrades Improve Water From River to Tap in K-Country

KANANASKIS, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Sept. 12, 2014) - Kananaskis residents have a stable supply of clean water as a result of a partnership between Alberta, EPCOR and the federal government.

Significant upgrades and expansions to the 30-year old Evan Thomas Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant in Kananaskis to meet the growing water needs of the Bow Valley region are now complete.

A new water treatment plant and a new wastewater treatment plant using state-of-the-art technology were built under a public private partnership (P3) between the Alberta government and EPCOR, supported by the P3 Canada Fund.

"Our government is committed to supporting P3 projects across Canada that engage the expertise of the private sector to deliver infrastructure innovation and efficiencies," said John Barlow, Member of Parliament for Macleod. "This project is an excellent example of what can be achieved when the public and private sectors work together to build long-term, sustainable infrastructure for Canadians."

The upgraded treatment systems help protect the aquatic environment in the region, with cleaner water returned to the Kananaskis River. In addition, expansions and upgrades to the water storage and distribution systems will increase flow and enhance fire protection services throughout the area.

"Completing the Evan Thomas project ensures we will be able to meet the water needs of the growing numbers of residents, businesses and visitors in this beautiful region of our province for many years to come. It also ensures that we are using this region's water in an environmentally responsible and sustainable way," said Wayne Drysdale, Minister, Alberta Infrastructure.

The Alberta government will continue to own the facility and be responsible for its services. Under the $59.6 million P3 terms, EPCOR designed, built and provided partial financing for the project. EPCOR will operate the new water and wastewater treatment plants and the water storage and distribution systems for 10 years following construction completion.

"EPCOR, along with its partners Stantec and Lockerbie Stanley Inc., applied its 100 years of water services expertise to bring this project to completion on-time and on-budget, even in the face of the challenges created by the 2013 flood. We are pleased to be a member of the Kananaskis community, and contributing to a clean and healthy environment." - Dr. Stephen Stanley, EPCOR Senior Vice-President of Water Canada

The Government of Canada contributed $9.95 million through the P3 Canada Fund towards construction of the facility.
