UPS Entrepreneurial Spirit Award Generates Excitement in Latin America

More Than US$50,000 in Cash Prizes and Technology Equipment Up for Grabs for SMEs

MIAMI, FL--(Marketwire - September 10, 2010) -  Cash and technology are key factors to any company's success and the UPS Entrepreneurial Spirit Award offers just that. The contest, which launched on August 16 and ends on September 30, will award more than US$50,000 in cash and in-kind technology products from HP to the three most innovative and successful small-and-medium size enterprises (SMEs) in the region.

Launched in Mexico for the first time in 2008, the UPS Entrepreneurial Spirit Award has since expanded to include 13 additional countries* in Latin America and the Caribbean, with participants completing the following requirements:

  • To participate, companies must submit a 500 word essay and complete the entry form available on the official contest Web site:
  • The contest is open to all legally registered SMEs in the participating countries that have between 10 and 250 employees and no less than two years of operation as of January 31, 2010.
  • Limited to one entry per SME, each essay received will be reviewed by a diverse panel of experts who will select the contest winners based on originality and innovation, business implementation, customer service and overall results.

The submissions will be reviewed in a three round process beginning with a local selection and reaching a panel of regional experts representing academia, media, and the banking sector. Together with HP, UPS assembled the following top executives and industry experts for the panel:

  • Felipe Aldunate - Editorial Director for America Economía magazine
  • Fernando Cimato - Marketing Communications Manager, Imaging and Printing Group, HP Latin America
  • José Acosta - Vice President of Strategic Development and Public Affairs, UPS Americas Region
  • Luis Sanz - Associate Dean of Master Programs and Director of the Business Center, INCAE Business School
  • Pablo Angelelli - Science and Technology Specialist, Inter-American Development Bank

The panel of judges will award the top three SMEs with cash prizes ranging from US$25,000 for first place; US$15,000 for second place; and US$10,000 for third place. In addition to the cash prizes, HP joined efforts with UPS for this initiative to provide all three winners with a premium technology package which includes one HP Probook 4720s or similar and one HP Color LaserJet CM2320 MFP or similar.

* The 14 Latin America participating countries are: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Puerto Rico.
