UPS Foundation Donates $50,000 for Flood Relief Efforts in El Salvador

SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR--(Marketwire - December 22, 2009) - The UPS Foundation recently provided a USD$50,000 grant to the American Red Cross in support of international flood relief efforts in El Salvador, where tropical storm Ida left thousands of people without homes.

In an effort to provide aid to the families who lost their homes due to the heavy rains that triggered floods and landslides that left a path of destruction, the funds will be used to support the construction of transitional shelters, provide kitchen sets and hygiene kits needed for these families.

"It's distressing to see the devastation caused by natural disasters such as these but I'm proud to see how UPS employees have once again come together to support the impacted communities. UPS encourages other corporations and individuals to do what they can to help at this critical moment when lives are in the balance," said Stephen Flowers, UPS Americas President.

As part of the efforts to support the country, UPS employees in El Salvador are helping to package food supplies and make deliveries to the victims of the storm. Meanwhile, partners in Honduras and Guatemala are involved in preparing food shipments to assist ongoing relief efforts.

"Volunteerism is something that binds us together as a company and makes us stronger," said Ken Sternad, president of The UPS Foundation. "I truly believe that people prefer to do business with, and work for, companies that act responsibly and care about the communities they serve."

The UPS Foundation has long been a contributor to disaster relief, providing funds, logistical expertise and in-kind transportation donations for virtually every major disaster in recent years. Examples of recent contributions include a delivery of 70 tons of food and relief supplies to the Red Cross for the communities impacted by the earthquake and tsunami in American Samoa in September 2009, a US$48,000 grant to the United Way of Taiwan to support reconstruction efforts after Typhoon Morakot hit in August 2009 and a US$200,000 pledge to support delivery efforts for aid to Myanmar in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Nargis in May 2008.
