Urgency Around Permanency: A National Stakeholder's Summit in Ottawa

OTTAWA, ON--(Marketwired - Nov 3, 2014) - Canada is recognized around the world for its high quality of life and commitment to families. And yet more than 30,000 children and youth today do not have a permanent home.

Instead, they languish in foster and group care across the country where they risk aging out of the system into a life of homelessness.

On Wednesday, November 5, 2014, the Adoption Council of Canada (ACC) will be bringing together the country's leading child welfare officials, provincial children's advocates and adoption representatives to find a solution to this growing crisis.

The "Urgency around Permanency" Summit will be a full-day event in Ottawa, devoted to discussing and working through the urgent need for solutions to dismantle the barriers to permanency for children and youth in the child welfare system across Canada.

Speakers will include Special Guest His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, Laura Eggertson Chair of the Adoption Council of Canada, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond British Columbia's Representative for Children and Youth and a panel of current and former youth in care who will talk about what it's like to grow up in the child welfare system, and why permanency matters.

Members of the media are invited to attend the Summit presentations in the morning on the second floor Atrium of the River Building at Carleton University starting at 9:00 a.m.

As stated by Tabitha McDonald, the ACC's Youth Speak Out Coordinator and former youth in care who transitioned into adulthood without a family, "permanency is not only a bed in a home, it's a door you can open without a key."

Together, we will find permanency for Canada's 30,000 waiting children and youth.
