Urgency Around Permanency Best Practices Summit in Ottawa, November 4 and 5, 2015

OTTAWA, ON--(Marketwired - October 27, 2015) - The Honourable Bob Rae, former leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and Ontario's 21st Premier, will deliver the keynote address at the Adoption Council of Canada's Urgency around Permanency Best Practices Summit on November 4, 2015.

Rae will join stakeholders from across the country at the two-day summit, November 4 and 5, 2015, which will be devoted to discussing and working through the urgent need for solutions to dismantle the barriers to permanency in Canada's child welfare system.

Currently, more than 30,000 children and youth are waiting to find permanent homes in Canada. Research shows that children in care face a higher risk of homelessness, dropping out of school, run-ins with the law, poverty, mental illness and suicide.

Participants at the summit include a panel of current and former youth in care who will talk about what it's like to grow up in the child welfare system and why permanency matters.

Other highlights include the unveiling of the ACC's Best Practices Project, Finding Permanency for Vulnerable Canadian Children and Youth with (dis)Abilities as well as songs and stories by Susan Aglukark, Juno-award winning singer/songwriter and former chair of Arctic Children and Youth Foundation.

Presenters at the conference include the Honourable Tracy MacCharles, Ontario Minister of Children and Youth Services; Irwin Elman, Ontario Advocate for Children and Youth; Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, British Columbia Representative for Children and Youth; and Del Graff, Alberta Child and Youth Advocate.

Members of the media are invited to attend the Summit presentations at the Hilton Garden Inn Ottawa Airport starting at 9:00 a.m. on November 4 and 5, 2015.

Together, we will find permanency for Canada's 30,000 waiting children and youth.
