Urgency of Improving Information Economics Sparks Major Growth in CGOC Community

Derek Gascon Appointed CGOC Executive Director

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwired - November 20, 2013) - CGOC (Compliance, Governance & Oversight Council), a practitioners' forum focused on developing information lifecycle governance practices that improve information economics, today announced it is experiencing significant membership growth of approximately 25 percent per year as organizations increasingly give high priority to developing an information governance strategy as a means of improving the underlying economics of the information infrastructure. To manage the CGOC's growth and extend the organization's governance focus to include the direct impact on information economics, Derek Gascon has been named executive director, responsible for leading primary research, working groups and best practices. Gascon takes over day-to-day management and leadership from Deidre Paknad, CGOC founder and vice president of information lifecycle governance solutions at IBM. Paknad has directed the CGOC since it was founded in 2004 and continues to play a pivotal role. Gascon's initial focus is on coordinating regional executive meetings and managing the group's publication schedule, which includes the "eDiscovery Requirements Toolkit," the " Disposal and Governance Benchmark Report," and an update to the "Information Lifecycle Governance Leader Reference Guide."

Gascon brings a unique background and set of experiences to the CGOC, having spent more than twenty years in a range of positions related to information management, from IT leadership on the customer side to delivering products and solutions in the vendor community. As an IT manager early in his career he led the conversion of physical filing systems to computerized processes as well as the implementation of initial email, data warehouse, collaboration, network and storage systems. On the vendor side, Gascon has maintained a customer-centric approach in developing strategy and delivering products and solutions for email and medical image archiving, content management, index/search, and archive storage across diverse industries including banking, healthcare, media & entertainment, Web 2.0, law enforcement, higher education and others. His leadership experience crosses multiple disciplines including strategic planning, marketing, product management, software engineering and business development.

"It is really an honor for me to take on this role with such a distinguished industry association and have the opportunity to work alongside a group of leaders and practitioners in a domain I am passionate about," said Derek Gascon, CGOC executive program director. "The convergence of traditional information governance and big data initiatives occurring within organizations today magnifies the relevance of the work the CGOC conducts and will continue to pursue in these very dynamic times."
