U.S. Labour Leader to speak at Convention

Unions Making a Difference: Canadian Labour Congress Convention Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, News Editor, World News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor MONTRÉAL--(CCNMatthews - June 15, 2005) - John J. Sweeney, the president of the American Federation of Labour & Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) speaks to delegates at the Canadian Labour Congress convention Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

Sweeney was elected president of the AFL-CIO at the federation's biennial convention in October 1995 and has been re-elected twice since then. At the time of his election, he was serving his fourth four-year term as president of SEIU, which grew from 625,000 to 1.1 million members under his leadership. Sweeney is the author of America Needs A Raise: Fighting for Economic Security and Social Justice.

As the federation of America's unions, the AFL-CIO includes more than 13 million of America's workers in 58 member unions working in virtually every part of the economy. Its mission is to bring social and economic justice to our nation by enabling working people to have a voice on the job, in government, in a changing global economy and in their communities.
