Usablenet Holiday Shopping Index Shows Highest Spike in Mobile Activity on Cyber Monday

Mobile Technology Leader Examines Holiday Mobile Shopping Activity; Overall Transactions Increase 227% Over Baseline Performance

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Dec 4, 2013) - Mobile and multichannel technology company Usablenet today released the results of its Holiday Shopping Index for the 2013 holiday shopping weekend, ranging from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday. This year's data reflects the highest mobile shopping rates on record. The Usablenet platform served over 130M page views on Cyber Monday alone, which is double the amount of traffic compared to the same day in 2012. Cumulatively more than 660M pages were served on the Usablenet platform from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday.

"The significant increases in mobile shopping activity on Cyber Monday suggest that we should rename this date Mobile Monday," said Carin van Vuuren, Chief Marketing Officer of Usablenet.

Usablenet powers the mobile experiences for top retailers such as Aeropostale, ShopHQ, CVS, J.Crew, Marks & Spencer, ASOS, Mattel, Dell and many others. Usablenet's Holiday Shopping Index examined mobile shopping activity across 20 retailers on Usablenet's platform from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday -- the highest volume shopping days of the year. Data was compared with a baseline shopping period taking place in mid-October of this year.

Notably, Cyber Monday shopping trends differed between U.S. and UK shoppers as mobile site visits increased by 129% in the U.S., versus 40% in the UK. U.S. mobile shoppers transacted 354% more than on a normal weekend, with transaction revenue increasing by 388%. UK percentages were more subdued, with visitors transacting 100% more than on a normal weekend, and transaction revenue increasing 86%.

Findings reveal the impact of holiday shopping on the mobile activity among both U.S. and UK shoppers, with the UK having room to grow in further establishing mobile usage and dependence. With mass consumer adoption of mobile shopping poised to accelerate into 2014, U.S. and UK data will become less disparate.

Additional Usablenet Holiday Shopping Index findings include:

  • Overall mobile transactions increased 227%
  • M-commerce revenues up by over 322%
  • Average order values (AOV) increased by 30%.
  • Total mobile visits increased by 72%
  • Conversion rates increased by 93%
  • Average visit length was 8% longer than baseline weekend.
  • 88% increase in new visitors coming to mobile sites
  • 76% more users returned to mobile sites.
  • 72% of mobile revenue came from iOS devices.

"The surge in mobile shopping over the holiday weekend in both the US and UK comes at no surprise as more consumers are using their mobile phones and tablets to browse and shop," continued van Vuuren. "This holiday season retailers were more focused on integrating promotions and deals with mobile, and some retailers went even further by adding mobile-only deals. Retailers that integrated personalization into their mobile experiences are seeing even more successful engagement with consumers, and we anticipate these trends to accelerate into 2014."
