U.S.English Highlights Poll Showing Most Americans Support English as Official Language

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwired - May 20, 2013) -  U.S.English Chairman Mauro E. Mujica today released the following statement upon hearing results of the latest Rasmussen Reports poll, indicating that 84 percent of Americans support English as the official language of the United States.

"It is not surprising to see that an overwhelming majority of Americans continue to support English as the official language of the United States," Chairman Mujica said. "The English language is the one factor with the ability to unite all residents of the United States in our diversity. It places all residents, regardless of background, on a level playing field, and proficiency in English has been linked to better, higher paying jobs. Even so, the United States Congress has failed to act in accordance with the will of the American people. Now is the time for Congress to act and pass legislation declaring English the official language of the United States."

H.R. 997, The English Language Unity Act, was introduced in the House of Representatives by Congressman Steve King (R-IA). Its companion bill in the Senate, S. 464, was introduced by Senator James Inhofe (R-OK). Already boasting 42 bipartisan cosponsors in the House and 6 in the Senate, both bills currently await further action in Committee.

The Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of 1,000 Americans was conducted on May 10-11, 2013. These results come nearly a year after U.S.English commissioned a Harris Interactive poll in June of 2012, finding that 88 percent of Americans support English as the official language of the United States. The breakdown from that 2012 poll included support from 96 percent of Republicans, 83 percent of Democrats and 89 percent of Independents.
