USS Carl Vinson Crew Volunteer at America's 400th Anniversary

Sailors Provide Key Service Role During May 11-13 Anniversary Weekend

WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 30, 2007 -- More than 600 sailors aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) have pledged more than 3,600 volunteer hours during America's Anniversary Weekend. Most of the aircraft carrier's volunteers will assist at park-and-ride lots throughout the region during the May 11- 13 event. Others will be stationed throughout Anniversary Weekend venues at Jamestown Settlement, Historic Jamestowne and nearby Anniversary Park to ensure guests enjoy a pleasant experience during their stay.

"In the honored maritime tradition that helped bring the first settlers to America, USS Carl Vinson is proud to serve our country and our community as volunteers for America's 400th Anniversary," said Capt. Ted Carter, commanding officer of USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70).

Jeanne Zeidler, executive director of Jamestown 2007, said, "Captain Carter's crew has served as the U.S. Navy's ambassadors during America's 400th Anniversary, and will be among the first to greet visitors when they arrive at Anniversary Weekend. The dedication of USS Carl Vinson's crew to the commemoration and to the Hampton Roads community as a whole reflects highly on the men and women who serve on board."

More than 15,000 volunteer hours are needed for Anniversary Weekend. The USS Carl Vinson crew is filling some of them, but additional volunteers are needed to ensure the success of Anniversary Weekend. Visit www.Americas400thAnniversary.com to volunteer.

America's Anniversary Weekend honors Jamestown, Va. as America's first permanent English settlement. This three-day weekend will introduce guests to a "new" Jamestown story. New facilities at Jamestown Settlement and Historic Jamestowne tell the story of the three cultures that converged during the settlement's earliest years.

Anniversary Weekend guests also can enjoy Anniversary Park, which is being built exclusively for the three-day weekend. Interactive exhibits, displays and outdoor concerts featuring the Virginia Symphony and Richmond Symphony orchestras as well as performances by Grammy-award winners Bruce Hornsby, Chaka Khan and Ricky Skaggs will provide a musical backdrop to Anniversary Weekend.

A one-day, date-specific Anniversary Weekend ticket provides parking, continuously running shuttle transportation and admission to all three Jamestown sites. Tickets sales have been limited to 30,000 per day, ensuring guests a comfortable visit 400 years in the making. No annual passes or other tickets to Jamestown Settlement or Historic Jamestowne will be valid on these days.

Anniversary weekend tickets and accommodations are available through Colonial Williamsburg, the official hotels of the commemoration, and may be reserved by phone at (866) 400-1607 or by visiting http://www.Americas400thAnniversary.com. Guests may purchase date-specific, single-day tickets at $30 for adults and $15 for children 6-12. Children 6 and younger will be admitted free. The call center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Callers outside of regular operating hours will be prompted to leave a message, which will be returned the next day.

USS Carl Vinson's crew has filled the volunteer rolls for many of the Signature Events that make up this 18-month commemoration honoring Jamestown.

The vessel's crew provided 261 volunteers for October's 225th Anniversary of the Victory at Yorktown, resulting in 2,400 volunteer hours. Crewmembers also volunteered for February's State of the Black Union 2007 and last November's Jamestown Live! Internet webcast that beamed the Jamestown story to more than one million students worldwide.

USS Carl Vinson's crew has already donated 30,000 community volunteer hours in more than 240 volunteer projects since arriving at Northrop Grumman Newport News for a Refueling Complex Overhaul (RCOH).

Americans have observed Jamestown anniversaries every 50 years since 1807. America's 400th Anniversary continues the tradition of grand commemorations, offering 10 signature events during an 18-month period.
