VAC: Heroes Remember Project Honoured with GTEC Award

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 4, 2005) - Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) has received a 2005 Technology in Government (GTEC) Distinction Award. A gold medal in the "Securing and Managing Information Assets" category was presented last night to the Heroes Remember Project Team which is part of VAC's Canada Remembers Program. The Heroes Remember Project is a unique online collection of video and audio conversations with Canadian Veterans.

"Hearing first hand about the Second World War or the Korean War from those who survived makes that history come alive for Canadians, especially for our youth," said the Honourable Albina Guarnieri, Minister of Veterans Affairs. "Canadians treasure these heroes and are indebted to them for sharing their experiences. My department officials have shown tremendous industry and purpose in capturing these valuable reflections."

Heroes Remember offers Canadians of all ages the opportunity to experience history through the eyes of those who lived it. Through the use of streaming technology, VAC is providing access to the collection of video and audio conversations it has recorded with hundreds of Canadian Veterans over the past 30 years. These interviews offer the rare and personal memories of Veterans from all regions of Canada and each of the 20th century's wars as well as missions of the Canadian Forces. To explore Heroes Remember, please visit the Veterans Affairs Canada Web site sub.cfm?source=collections/hrp(www.vac-acc.gc.ca).

Heroes Remember was made possible through the Canadian Culture Online Program of Canadian Heritage. Other major partners include the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and Testaments of Honour.

VAC, through the Canada Remembers Program, endeavours to keep alive the achievements and sacrifices made by those who served Canada in times of war, armed conflict and peace and to promote an understanding of the significance of these efforts in Canadian life as we know it today.

2005 is the Year of the Veteran: Celebrate. Honour. Thank. Remember. Teach.
