OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 9, 2005) - In honour of the 60th anniversary of Victory in the Far East and the end of the Second World War, commemorative ceremonies and celebrations will be held in the National Capital Region to pay tribute to Canada's Veterans during the Year of the Veteran.

Commemorative Ceremonies and Events - August 12 to August 14

On August 12, a Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque will be unveiled, recognizing the Defence of Hong Kong during the Second World War as an event of historic significance to Canada. This event will take place at 7:00 p.m in the LeBreton Gallery at the Canadian War Museum, in the presence of Veterans of the Defence of Hong Kong. Media are welcome to attend.

Citizens in the National Capital Region are encouraged to join over 100 Veterans of the Far East campaign, including Hong Kong, Burma, HMCS Uganda and Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans, at a commemorative wreath-laying ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at the National War Memorial. Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, the Honourable Albina Guarnieri, Minister of Veterans Affairs, the 2005 Silver Cross Mother, Mrs. Claire Leger, and other dignitaries will participate in the ceremony to thank Veterans and to remember the sacrifices made by those who served and gave their lives. The Ceremonial Guard, upon its return march to the Cartier Square Drill Hall after the Changing of the Guard ceremony on Parliament Hill, will stop and salute the Veterans. Veterans will conduct a march-past; with some Veterans riding in military vehicles. Biographies of Veterans known to be attending the ceremony and willing to speak to the media are available from Veterans Affairs Canada.

Note: media must be accredited for the ceremony at the National War Memorial. To obtain accreditation please contact the Parliamentary Press Gallery at 992-6517.
