VAC/Media Advisory: Media Invited to Participate in Overseas Events in France to Mark the 90th Anniversary of the Battles of the Somme and Beaumont-Hamel

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - June 8, 2006) - An official Government of Canada delegation led by the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and including Canadian youth, war-era and Canadian Forces Veterans, representatives of Veterans' organizations, Parliamentarians and other officials, will travel to northern France to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Battles of the Somme and Beaumont-Hamel.



Monday, June 26: Delegation assembles in St. John's, NL

Tuesday, June 27: Delegation departs on DND Airbus for the Somme
region, France

Saturday, July 1: Delegation participates in an official
Government of Canada event at Beaumont-Hamel

Wednesday, July 5: Delegation returns to Canada


Media are invited to be part of this event. Those interested should contact Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) at the number below by June 14. Please note that spaces are limited. Transportation and accommodation expenses of media delegates are covered by VAC; for those outlets with pay policies, these expenses are estimated to be approximately $4,000 per person.

While in St. John's, the delegates will participate in local events. In France, they will participate in a range of commemorative ceremonies, including those at the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial and the Courcelette Memorial.

Other sites of historical significance to be visited by the delegation include the Menin Gate, in Ypres, Belgium, and Vimy Ridge. On Wednesday, July 5, the delegation will return to Canada, landing in Ottawa.
