Vail Symposium Welcomes Joanne King Herring as Honored Guest at 40th Anniversary Ruby Jubilee

VAIL, CO--(Marketwire - January 25, 2011) - The Vail Symposium is pleased to announce that Houston's own Joanne King Herring will be the honored guest at their 40th anniversary Ruby Jubilee on Saturday, February 19. Ms. Herring is best remembered for teaming up with U.S. Representative Charlie Wilson to raise the $1,000,000,000 to support resistance fighters against the Soviets and drove them out of Afghanistan in 1979. These events inspired the best-selling book Charlie Wilson's War and later the film starring Tom Hanks as Charlie Wilson and Julia Roberts as Joanne Herring.

Ms. Herring's visit to Vail comes shortly before her new memoir Diplomacy & Diamonds is published, revealing her fascinating life and political activism that continues to have an impact in Afghanistan today. She will be back in the fall to speak about it at a symposium honoring her latest activist partner Greg Mortenson, known for his success building schools in the volatile border region of Pakistan and Afghanistan and documented in the book Three Cups of Tea

The Ruby Jubilee celebrates the past, present and future legacy of The Vail Symposium and the positive affect it has had on residents and visitors to the Valley since 1971. The event is taking place at the Four Seasons Resort Vail and includes a live auction. Master of Ceremonies for the evening is comedian Sam Adams, music will be provided by the Hazel Miller Band and guests will be entertained as they arrive on the red carpet by Image Guru Montgomery Frazier.

A preview book party with Joanne King Herring will be hosted by Vail Symposium Board Member Lynette Dallas on Friday, February 18. Guests will have an exclusive opportunity to pre-order Diplomacy & Diamonds before it is published.
