Value Emerges as a Trend Driving Changes in Pharmacy Benefits

Topline Research Report Issued by the Foundation for Managed Care Pharmacy

ALEXANDRIA, VA--(Marketwire - June 10, 2008) - The results of the second annual "Emerging Trends Driving Changes in Pharmacy Benefits" survey sponsored by the Foundation for Managed Care Pharmacy (FMCP) have been released and posted on its website at www.fmcpnet.org. Areas of focus encompass emerging electronic health information technologies; consumer-driven pharmacy benefit plan designs; pay-for-performance initiatives; disease management activities; formulary benefit design; medication therapy management activities and other pharmacy management trends and practices.

Need for Value Seen in 2007 Study

Efforts in disease management, unique formulary design, medication therapy management and ePrescribing were the initiatives respondents most often considered critical to their organizations. Overall, the theme of "value" emerged in the 2007 survey results, marked by efforts focused not only on decreasing costs, but on an increasing focus on quality. Cynthia Pigg, executive director and CEO of the Foundation, said, "The desire for enhanced patient compliance is noted several times as a desired outcome, and the increase in the addition of zero copays for select disease states indicates there is growing interest in maximizing the value of the pharmacy benefit in order to lower total health care costs." Specialty Pharmacy and health care reform topped the list of emerging trends anticipated to have a significant impact on the future of managed care pharmacy.

New Survey Scheduled for July

The study was conducted to determine the actions being undertaken within large and small health plans and pharmacy benefit management (PBM) companies in key areas of the study. Two years of data now exist, enabling the identification of emerging trends against the benchmark data. The third annual Emerging Trends survey will be fielded in July. Pigg states, "Pharmaceuticals and the services of managed care pharmacy experts play a vital role in improving health care. We felt it important to survey these key opinion leaders in order to share latest emerging trends with employers and other health care professionals that work with pharmacy experts in order to improve health care for all."

The study was funded by FMCP through an unrestricted grant from Merck & Co., Inc. Data collection and analysis was conducted by The HSM Group, Ltd, a national leader in health care market research and strategy development including economic modeling solutions.
