Varian Semiconductor Ranked #1 in VLSI Research Customer Satisfaction Survey

GLOUCESTER, MA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- July 10, 2006 --Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates, Inc. (NASDAQ: VSEA) has again achieved the number one ranking in the prestigious VLSI Research 10 BEST Award. For the ninth time in ten years, Varian Semiconductor has been recognized as the best company in customer satisfaction in the Large Suppliers of Wafer Processing Equipment segment. The company also was voted #1 in customer satisfaction among the Large Suppliers of Chip Making Equipment overall this year.

These awards are based upon customer survey results. Varian Semiconductor received the best ratings among its wafer processing peers in each of the following categories that are critical to customers: cost of ownership, build quality, quality of results, product performance, field engineering support, support after sales, and commitment. The company also tied as the best in uptime, software, and process support.
