Varian Semiconductor's VIISta® 900XP Named a Top Product of 2006 by Solid State Technology Magazine

GLOUCESTER, MA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- February 21, 2007 -- Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates, Inc. (NASDAQ: VSEA) today announced that its VIISta® 900XP single-wafer medium current ion implanter has been selected a Top Product of 2006 by Solid State Technology magazine. The VIISta 900XP was the only ion implanter selected by Solid State Technology magazine's editorial advisory board in the Semiconductor/Thin-Film Processing category.

"The VIISta 900XP was selected for this distinction because of its increased upper energy range and single-wafer architecture, enabling zero degree implant capability with an output of 500 wafers per hour (WPH)," said Phil LoPiccolo, Editor-in-Chief of Solid State Technology magazine.

"We are honored that Solid State Technology magazine recognizes the architectural advantages of our VIISta 900XP, including highest productivity, superior particle performance and precise true-zero angle control," said Gary Dickerson, Chief Executive Officer of Varian Semiconductor. "In today's high performance devices, the energy requirements for isolation wells often drop into the sub MeV range. The VIISta 900XP provides customers with an opportunity to move recipes from costly high energy batch systems onto the industry's most productive single wafer medium current implanter. With true-zero angle control available only on single wafer platforms, customers can reduce costs by increasing packing density and improving device performance by reducing shadowing effects."

The VIISta® platform is the only complete production-proven suite of single wafer solutions for all medium current, high current and high energy applications. All of the VIISta products feature the Varian Control System (VCS™), the Varian Positioning System (VPS™) and a common single wafer endstation. This high degree of commonality across the VIISta platform provides flexibility in managing capacity, product mix changes, spare parts and training. Varian Semiconductor's SuperScan™ and vMask™ product options are available on the VIISta 900XP platform.
