Varnish Software Introduces Massive Storage Engine 2.0 With Optional Cache Persistence

Allows High-Performance Web Sites to Maintain Cache Content Across Restarts and Reboots

OSLO, NORWAY and LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM and STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN and PARIS, FRANCE and NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Mar 10, 2016) - Varnish Software, a leader in Web Architecture Performance, today announced Varnish Massive Storage Engine (MSE) 2.0 with optional cache persistence. The new persistence capability allows websites to retain data across restarts and reboots and ensures that, in the case of a system crash, websites will not lose their cache content.

An exclusive module of Varnish Plus, Varnish MSE was designed specifically for the high-performance needs of video distribution, CDNs, and large cache use cases that require Varnish MSE to enable the Varnish caching layer to handle multi-terabyte data sets. For big CDNs, an empty cache is a no-go, and reintroducing large cache objects, of the size for which MSE is required, is time consuming and expensive. With Varnish MSE 2.0, all objects remain in cache with minimal performance reduction.

Varnish Massive Storage Engine 2.0 Benefits:

  • Preserve with persistence: With the option to use persistence, large data sets are preserved/retained in the cache on forced or unforced restart, leading to greater durability;
  • Fast restart: Persistent cache retains cached data from before planned or unplanned crash, avoiding the need for time-consuming reload so operations can proceed full speed ahead with little to no downtime.

"If a server should crash, rebuilding content in memory can take a lot of time. While it is building up the content, performance suffers," said Per Buer, founder and CTO of Varnish Software. "We've added Persistence to Varnish Massive Store Engine 2.0 to ensure that our users can repair and maintain their sites as quickly as possible."
