Varonis Launches Complete and Secure Data Archiving and Migration

Varonis Data Transport Engine Solves IT Nightmare by Allowing Automatic, Easy, Safe and Non-Disruptive Enterprise Data Migration

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - Sep 5, 2012) - Varonis® Systems Inc. today announced the launch of Varonis Data Transport Engine (DTE), the newest family member of the Varonis Data Governance Suite, which solves one of the biggest yet most neglected IT challenges -- how to securely move and archive data, remove stale data, and ensure permissions to moved data are maintained or improved. Recent research conducted by Varonis found that 96% of C-level IT executives considered data migrations difficult. The major areas of concern were maintaining availability (69%), determining which data is needed, stale or active (66%), determining who data belongs to (62%) and maintaining and/or translating correct access controls (61%).(1)

Unstructured data is backed up, archived and manipulated almost constantly. Moving and archiving data between platforms, devices and domains can result in costly downtime, employees unable to access or update files, and exponential increases in risk as incorrectly permissioned data sets are centralized in heavily accessed servers. Among those surveyed by Varonis, the top features desired for data migration are easy selection criteria, automation that allowed users to access source data while it was being moved, incrementally copying new and changed files, and automatic optimization of permissions when moving data.

Varonis DTE harnesses the metadata generated by the Varonis Metadata Framework and features an intelligent rules engine which allows IT personnel to identify the data that should be moved, where it should end up, when it should be moved, whether the permissions should remain effectively the same or be changed (for the better), and then executes the migration automatically -- end to end. Data can be either moved or copied between platforms and domains, allowing staff to create a sandbox environment before completing the move to test and refine the new hierarchy and permissions structure.

Key Features of the Data Transport Engine (DTE)

  • Configure and schedule one-time or ongoing migration rules
  • Incremental, intelligent migrations for large scale data sets
  • Automatically identify data sets for migration
  • Automatically maintain, enhance and/or translate permissions for migrated data
  • Safely remediate excessive permissions during server consolidations
  • Migrate data between disparate platforms
  • Migrate data between servers in different domains (translating domain specific permissions)
  • Name collision handling

The Varonis Data Transport Engine automates all the heavy lifting: copying data and metadata while adhering to maintenance windows and other scheduling constraints, automatically synchronizing source and destination with incremental copies even if the source data is still "live," translating permissions across platforms and domains, and reporting on progress every step of the way.

Yaki Faitelson, CEO and co-founder, Varonis said: "Whether you move data within an organization or in the aftermath of an acquisition -- if proprietary and business critical information is lost or accessible to the wrong people it could lead to catastrophic consequences. To put this into perspective, imagine that you have migrated data from dozens of decentralized servers into a few, centralized ones, and several folders containing sensitive data have misconfigured permissions (a common issue) -- sensitive data would be accessible to potentially hundreds or thousands of inappropriate people. Varonis DTE is a complete, secure archiving and migration solution to keep data safe and available during and after a migration."

Kevin Kampman, Research Director at Gartner, said: "IT staff is tasked with moving data around more frequently than we realize. Mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, platform changes and upgrades all generate a lot of behind the scenes work for IT resources, who are struggling to keep data available, maintain correct access, and to determine what data is no longer needed. Automation that intelligently moves and archives data across platforms and domains will make migrations less time consuming, less costly, effective for the business, and more secure."

ABOUT THE VARONIS® METADATA FRAMEWORK™
Four types of metadata are critical for data governance:

  • User and Group Information - from Active Directory, LDAP, NIS, SharePoint, etc.
  • Permissions and File System Information - knowing who can access what data in which containers
  • Access Activity - nowing which users do access what data, when and what they've done
  • Sensitive Content Indicators - wing which files contain items of sensitivity and importance, and where they reside

The Varonis Metadata Framework™ non-intrusively collects this critical metadata, generates metadata where existing metadata is lacking (e.g. its file system filters and content inspection technologies), preprocesses it, normalizes it, analyzes it, stores it, and presents it to IT administrators in an interactive, dynamic interface.
