Vaughan Is Tops In The World With Win In The Communities In Bloom Program

VAUGHAN, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 26, 2005) - The City of Vaughan was named the 2005 international winner of the 11th edition of the Communities In Bloom Awards on Saturday, September 24 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Vaughan earned "Five Blooms" as the winner of the International Challenge Category - Large, and received special mention for "Citizen Groups Supporting Their Community."

"I am very proud of how the City of Vaughan came together to make this prestigious win possible," said Mayor Michael Di Biase. "Through the efforts of our residents, business community and City staff, we can now tell everyone that we are the most beautiful city in the world. This is a marvellous accomplishment that has put Vaughan on the map internationally."

The Communities In Bloom program is designed to foster environmental and heritage awareness and improve the appearance of neighbourhoods, parks, open spaces and streets through the use of flowers, plants and trees. Participating communities are judged in the following categories: tidiness, environmental awareness, community involvement, natural and cultural heritage conservation, trees/urban forest management, landscaped areas, floral displays, and turf and groundcovers.

This year, Vaughan was competing against Aberdeen, Scotland; Stockport, England; Naperville, Illinois; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Barrie, Ontario.

"The City of Vaughan is the first municipality to pull off a three-peat and win consecutively the top prize at the provincial, national and international levels," said Regional Councillor Mario Ferri, Chair of the Communities In Bloom Beautification Committee. "Vaughan, in four short years of participating in the program, has made history. We were able to pull together and display our civic pride and spirit in earning this acclaimed international award."
